Default (Review) Wall-e: The Movie

It's at the Wilkinson American Movie day that I find myself blessed with a ticket for Wall-e. This means I get to see it before anyone else, that doesn't attend this tiny little première festival!

Looking around the net this movie receives a ton of praise, much the same like Finding Nemo in its days, which I never quite understood. This movie is said to be another revolution in 3D movies.

Without giving anything away, this movie is not revolutionary, and it's cheesy to the bone. But it's fun to watch and is definitely worth a ticket if you're still in touch with your inner child (the one that likes cute robots, not the one that likes to shoot the neighbour's cat).

Before the movie starts, you're given a short movie about a little bunny and a magician, it's freaking hilarious and is the best part about this entire movie trip that I had. Yes even the nachos had to lay down arms when it came to the movie with ZE BUNNY! I will bet you 100 dollars that even Hitler would have smiled during this piece of absolute art. Everyone in the room was laughing their a**es off, and that says a lot in my opinion.

On to the actual movie. Without giving anything away, the movie is slow moving, kinda relaxing if you wish, but there is just some stuff that really bothered me. I'll begin with that and end with the good part of the movie.

When you have a movie, like this one, people tend to add 'human' characters in by using real actors, and then making the rest of the world in 3D. That's cheap and it looks like crap. Make everything freaking 3D please or don't add them in at all. It completely takes you out of the movie. It seems that at Pixar, they're not as genius as the reviewers want you to believe, because in their case they added both, which seriously is a party killer. It goes completely to shit when you have to witness a scene where you have both 3D humans (our future selves) and real humans (us, basically). It made me wonder 'What the fuck happened to make us turn into 3D characters', because that's how they show it to you, first we were normal looking human beings from flesh and bones, and then in about 700 years we evolved to become 3D freaking cartoons. What's the explanation to that? Did we eat too many gamecubes during those 700 years?!?!! Really really annoying, and now that I told you, it'll be even more annoying for you because you'll be paying special attention to it.. The other explanation could be that they had some problems with their budget and couldn't invest enough cash to make all humans look consistent... but that can't be the case, so why the fuck they did, I'll never know.

On to the story. They make this kind of story on a mass scale in Holland and on a lesser scale in Belgium, it's called CHEESE. Fu-uck, what the hell is wrong with people if they start calling this a masterpiece. This is NOT a great story, it's a very very cheesy story, and I could swear I've read and seen this story many times before, just not with robots. The one thing that kicks ass are the little robots' characters. Every little robot that plays an important role throughout the movie received his own attitude, which will at least make you smile, and that's where the movie is good at...

The good, as I was saying, is that the movie is filled with little details that make you smile or even laugh. The most amusing is of course Wall-e as he's exploring his world, it's filled with plenty of little jokes (and for once, no movie reference jokes, yay) that will instantly put you in a good mood. The other fantastic part are the little robots (the ones that play somewhat of an important role) as they each have their own character or mental illness in some cases. This ends up creating a couple of hilarious scenes where all these characters and mental illnesses collide and make up for the confusing and detaching normal vs 3D human models.

Overall this movie is ok, and it would be great if I would have been 6 and had never seen a movie before. For the most of us, you've seen and heard pretty much every joke in this movie, and there's quite a few inconsistencies in the movie that plain suck if you figure them out. Never mind the ending, holy crap, can I have a piece of that cheese please?

Oh yes, I can't forget, the graphics are really pretty for the most part, and it shows that Pixar keeps improving their game. Still the World of Warcraft trailer looks plenty nicer then this to me, and it's pretty friggin old!

So I don't get it, this movie is a solid 7-10 but NOT the 97% that it gets on rotten tomatoes and other websites. or I went to see the wrong movie and actually saw Wall-e the bad version, where as the reviewers saw Wall-e the cream in your pants version.

If you want to see a feel good movie, go see this one as it's worth the money. If you get easily annoyed at little (or major) mistakes in a movie, you can still go see this as some of the jokes are still worth your time, but really, nothing beats the introduction movie of the bunny and the comedian, that was simply hilarious and that was a piece of art.

I give this a 7.5 out of 10.

I've been looking out for this movie and followed it quite a bit and frankly pixar has a reputation to uphold and I'm sure they did. However, after reading this, I'll think I'll keep it on my dl-list :P
